Mrs Karen Conway, R.G.N., First Assistant
Mrs Karen Conway is part of the team that provides surgery to patients under the care of Mr Rogers. She has been a theatre nurse for 23 years and has been assisting Mr Rogers since 1993. She chose to extend her role from operating theatre practitioner to first assistant by undertaking the course at Greenwich University which allows her to practice as a first assistant.
When the patient arrives in the operating theatre she double checks, with Mr Rogers, the consent form and the special requirements of the patient including important safety information such as drug sensitivities and allergies. She checks and ensures that all the necessary specialised equipment and instruments are prepared and are available for the procedure. She jointly supervises, with Mr Rogers, the safe positioning of the patient on the operating table, checking that all required attachments are safely positioned.
She assists during surgical procedures under the direct supervision of Mr Rogers and is particularly skilled as a laparoscopic camera-person. At the end of the procedure she assists in the safe transfer of the patient from the operating theatre to the recovery ward.
